For this illustration, I leaned heavily on the strong hue shifts of the Tamiya box art of Eiji Shimamura and Masami Onishi. Both artists' works stand out in the genre, making the "drab" military paint schemes pop. It's a study in use of coloration of lighting, but also one of patience- while digital speeds things up, each little functional element is a lighting, perspective, and logic exercise- each bolt, rail, edge casting a shadow, the shadow taking the bounce hue from either bluish or orange directions. This type of illustration is meant to clearly express the vehicle and detail accurately to a model builder so that there are little questions about the way something should be sized, shaped, or colored.
