McLandish Profile NZ4/3 Autonomous GP 1983 "Clockwork Lobster"
An autonomous alt-reality spin on the oddly bulky and cab-forward 1983 Formula One season, also the last period where cars had exposed engine elements. The livery is familiar to attract nostalgia, but critically different.
Final illo and detail. Most of my series plays tribute to the eras of racing cars uncluttered with sponsors, but a few spots of words here and there and a suggestive and familiar color combo just works.
Sketch pages. Before this step, there are a few dozen messy thumbnails- ballpoint on paper. The main form came from looking at the front silhouette of the McLaren MP4/5 and how it gave the appearance of a placid peak like Mt. Fuji.
Wheel covers are easy ways to express "future," but they were abandoned as they took away from the toughness.
Color rough. White form can be shown with various shadow colors. Warm shadow tone worked well with day-glo orange.
